BREAKING THE STIGMA

Every year, the Yepez family participates in NAMIWalks Chicago, a 5K walk to raise funds and awareness for mental health.

Though mental health issues affect the Latino community at a similar rate than the general population, only 33% of Latino adults with mental illness receive treatment each year. It’s likely we or someone we know faces mental health challenges but fear of being seen as crazy or weak, or bringing shame upon the family, prevent many from speaking out. Understanding the barriers that exist in our culture and bringing awareness to mental health, can bring us one step closer to breaking the stigma.
