QUINTANA ROO

Quintana Roo, a state on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, is home to Maya communities that celebrate Día de los Muertos through the traditional observance of Hanal Pixán, meaning "Food for the Souls" in Yucatec Maya.

Families prepare mukbil pollo, a large tamal cooked underground, as an offering to their ancestors. Altars are decorated with cempasúchil, candles, and photographs, while prayers in Maya are recited to welcome spirits back home. Many communities also perform Maya ceremonies featuring copal incense and traditional music, reinforcing their deep spiritual connection to the land and their ancestors.
