CHIAPAS
Chiapas is home to numerous indigenous groups, including the Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Chol, and Tojolabal Maya, who have preserved their ancestral traditions for centuries. In the highland town of Zinacantán, a predominantly Tzotzil Maya community, families incorporate their distinctive handwoven textiles into their Dia de Muertos celebration, often draping them over altars and graves as a sign of respect and continuity. A key part of the ritual takes place in cemeteries, where families gather to clean and decorate the tombs of their ancestors, lighting candles, and offering prayers.
